Chiropractic Adjustments
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment, also referred to as spinal manipulation, is the process of applying a quick, low-force thrust into a restricted joint.
Chiropractic adjustments are typically associated with the spine, but other joints in the body (like the ankle, hip, wrist, shoulder, etc.) may also demonstrate restrictions.
Restricted joints, meaning joints that are found to be “stuck” or not moving well, are typically the result of two main types of injuries.
Tissue injuries (think trauma such as falling, spraining your ankle, or various types of sports injuries).
Repetitive stress injuries (think sitting at a desk for long hours every day, repetitive poor lifting technique, or having poor posture in conjunction with a sedentary lifestyle).
What is the “popping” sound?
When an adjustment is delivered there’s a brief change in pressure within the joint space that allows for exchange of gas inside the joint capsule. This phenomenon is known as a “cavitation” and is the source of the popping sound.
Why is it beneficial?
The objective of an adjustment is to increase the range of motion of the affected joint. In addition to restoring a joint’s range of motion, the adjustment is also an effective tool in providing pain relief.
This combination of chiropractic adjustments with other manual therapy techniques and rehabilitative exercises helps to promote better joint function and healthier tissues surrounding those joints.
