Cupping Therapy
What is cupping?
Cupping is a safe, non-invasive practice where a trained practitioner will place a cup upside-down on your skin and suction out the air. When the air is suctioned from within the cup it lifts the skin and underlying muscle.
This practice dates back to ancient China and there are many different ways to perform cupping, such as dry and wet cupping. At Momenta, we practice dry suction cupping - no fire, no puncturing of the skin.
How does cupping work?
The suction created underneath the cup draws the skin up into the cup which often creates reddening of the skin. This reaction is your blood vessels responding to the change in pressure underneath the cup which results in an increase in blood flow and promotes lymphatic drainage.
The increase in circulation of blood and lymph allows for a local healing effect as freshly oxygenated blood is brought to the area and inflammatory chemicals are flushed out.
